Hi Peter,

According to Wikipedia, there were 53 EMD SD38s built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD). There is no mention of a booster unit. There were an additional 44 units built (M model) for the Brazilian Federal Railways and another 40 units, designated as the P model, for the Korean National Railways.

Wikipedia also notes that there were 83 units of a dash-2 model built (EMD SD38-2) by EMD. Again, there was no mention of a booster unit.

Photos I've seen show an additional unit working in tandem when required.

Regards, Chris

Chris,

I've seen on the rails, container haulers that have stacked containers. The containers aren't always the same size. Often I see bigger ones on top. Also, I think some of these are 5-car sets with 6 trucks. Is this something that is in the works?

Also, in the 50's and some beyond that, there were "streamliner" trains that had chuck-wagon cars with seats above in a vista done. These also had very streamlined locos in Stainless Steel. Are there any of these in the works?

Based on chatter I've read on this forum, it sounds like skin changing is easier than shape changing. Is that so? Would Brainbombers have to introduce a new LOCO shape for the streamliners? And the Vista style passenger car (carriage)?

This is getting to the point that very realistic modelling is possible. This is not just toy trains. This is animated, historically correct, diarama style modeling. Very cool. Smile

Hi Roger,

You're correct in noting that lately I've been trying to texture (is that a real verb?) as close to the prototype as I possibly can. It adds to my game experience and I thought it might be appreciated by others as well.

I've not attempted to build a model (yet). So I cannot comment from first hand experience whether building the model is more difficult than adding the texture. Each has its own learning curve and challenges. Texturing can be simple or more complex depending on the livery you are trying to model. I would presume the same for modeling. I would imagine a boxcar is much easier to model than a steam locomotive. I'm sure Willi could provide a more comprehensive answer.

We seem to have a streamliner model coming from Brainbomber in the next extension pack; Rob left a post and image in the extension pack eight thread. We already have some Santa Fe streamliner carriages available courtesy of the Gov. The next logical addition would be a vista style car and perhaps an observation car for the end of the train. I intend to texture the locos (A and B) and carriages into a number of different liveries. Suggestions are always welcome as I would rather build a texture that would be used.

Intermodal freight/infrastructure should be available. I would hope Brainbomber moves in that direction at some point. I provided some images to them. Let's see what develops.

I know our friends on the other side of the pond would like some modeling done as well so we should be patient and allow Brainbomber the time necessary to move us all forward.

Best regards, Chris

Hi Roger and Chris

Yes, of course it depends on the complexity of a model. As long as you don't have a model with many detail parts and maybe even animations like a steam locomotive or the Swiss Crocodile, creating realistic textures and UV-mapping these skins to the model is at least so much work like creating the mesh.

And as you know, you can't just create a model and implement it into RTR, this has to be done via BrainBombers.

So, again Chris, many thanks for your many fantastic textures, I know how much work is behind it! Smile

Best regards,

Willi

Peter,

I went to google and wikipedia and saw exactly the picture you posted! The main definition is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slug_(railroad) and if you click the little block to expand the picture you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Lowslug.jpg where the engine is identified down to the serial number. The Slug in the picture started life as a full Engine and was cut down. Very interesting.

That's correct. AR in the USA is taken by Arkansas so Arizona got AZ. The USA letter codes are all based on English so we don't get things like D for Germany (Deutchland) or CH for Switzerland (?). I find that AZRoger is available on every forum I use. That way I only have to remember one user name for logging on. Smile

Hi Roger,

Yes, thats right, CH (Confederatio Helvetica) stands for Switzerland. Smile And for the same reason like you, to only have to remember one user name, I use the full name as there seems to be hundreds of Willis on other forums. Laughing

Btw, do you know if still locos with the original Santa Fe painting and just this small BNSF lettering like on the picture are driving around, 10 years after ATSF has gone? Sad

@ Peter: Really nice pic you have found. I didn't know that there were /are cut down locos like this.

But we're getting more and more off-topic (sorry Chris), maybe there should be a new category "Prototype" in this forum? But I'm looking forward to the next extension pack with Chris' beautiful textures! Smile

Best regards,

Willi

Thanks Peter and Roger for the info on the booster/slug. I've never seen one before. I wonder what the rationale was for cutting down an engine - what justifies the expense for such extreme modifications?

Peter,

Thanks again. I had been looking for a booster patterned after the SD38 anyway so my search had been too narrow.

Here's another candidate for an upcoming extension pack - a SFRD ice reefer. Note that this texture introduces new structural elements.

And another ice reefer with a different billboard message.

And yet another ice reefer.
