Hi RTR friends,

Some of you may have noticed already, that I have started with modelling for RTR. After I have finished my first model, a switch tower, and after quite some trial and error, I have made it to implement my switch tower in RTR for testing. See screenshot below:

The whole process isn’t so simple. X file isn’t = x file and DDS/DXT isn’t = DDS/DXT. Depending on the software you use, there are different definitons generated, although it’s the same file format, what can even lead to program crashes.

Generally, for RTR modelling you need the following from BrainBombers: detailed definitions, own identifiers and a password generator utility. Before you “bomb” BrainBombers now with inquiries – they have almost no time for that as they want to further develop the program 😉 – please profit from my experiences first. Maybe I can serve as a kind of “interface” for RTR-modelling. I have opened a special thread for that: RTR Modelling FAQ http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?boardid=19&thid=214” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?boardid=19&thid=214. Please let’s concentrate to this place for all questions and experience sharing about modelling so everybody can find all informations immediately.

Back to the model: Night light effects work, but the coloring of the roof and the walls doesn’t work, yet. I’m in contact with BrainBombers for that. More screenshots and informations: http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?start=0&boardid=19&thid=109” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?start=0&boardid=19&thid=109.

Now I just hope that you like my first RTR model.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Willi,

Your first RtR model is marvelously done! This switch tower is just as pertinent to North American layouts.

I congratulate you and look forward to participating in some small way.

    Best regards, Chris

    I like it.

Looks like C Box that I worked in for a short time.

    Willi,

That looks like a great model. I’m glad you started this thread. I have just recently started digging around in the xli files trying to piece together exactly how all the object files are tied together. (Hope BrainBombers don’t mind a little digging in their things). :)

I’m an experienced 3D modeller (several years making User Created Objects for The Sims), and am very interested in getting some User Created Content out there, I truely believe as the UCC becomes more available, the popularity of this great sim will only increase. I hope that BrainBombers is working on ways to make it easier to get great stuff like this into the sim.

Like I said, I’m an experienced modeller, but my texturing has room for improvement (but i’m constantly working on that part of my modelling hehe). If you would be interested in teaming up on some objects, feel free to email me. I would be happy to work with you (and tap your brain for the things you’ve already learned) on some new objects for RTR and IH.

    Hi,

Great that you like my first RTR model, thanks. :)

@jdgoss1: I agree with you and have written that before, that RTR will become even much more popular and widespread with more user content and models from countries all over the world. I will get in contact with you by email.

So let’s hope this will be the start of a great add-on scene. 😉

    Best regards,

    Willi

    Hi,

Puh, finally I made it. Thanks to the support of BrainBombers now everything works, including colour changing. The switch tower can now be built in every desired colour variation:

I will write a detailled instruction about the file structure in the Modelling FAQ thread: http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?boardid=19&thid=214” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?boardid=19&thid=214 , so you can create your own models successfully.

I have seen in the wish list that there have been posted MANY wishes for new models – after extension packs 9 and 10 have been released. People never seem to be satisfied. 😆

As everything works now, I can really start with modelling for RTR. But I’m so egoistic that I will begin with the models that are most important for me. 😆 What means European rolling stock and buildings, mostly Swiss and German.

I also intend to create a street system, but I have to check if BrainBombers can make it like tracks, so the elements snap together. I also want to create a catenary system, what is needed for modern rolling stock. But without overhead wire and you will have to place it manually, as RTR doesn’t support splines.

Of course you can also tell me your wish for a model. But then I need plans, measurements and photos of the object from you. I don’t have the time to search for hours or days for informations about the model I make for someone else. And of course I can’t make promises if and when the model will be finished.

But hopefully some others will also start with modelling for RTR. I will be pleased to help you with my experiences.

    Best regards,

    Willi

    Hi Willi,

    Excellent!

Is there any way this tower can be made available ahead of another formal extension pack?

As selfish as I am, I’d hate to have to wait several months before being able to use it.

Man, you take my breath away with this model.

    Best regards, Chris

    Hi,

In the meantime I have published some informations about the file definition and integration in the Modelling FAQ thread: http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?boardid=19&thid=214” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?boardid=19&thid=214

I have also added the ground shadow to the switch tower:

How that is done and detailed step-by-step informations about the model structure will follow tomorrow in the above mentioned Modelling FAQ thread.

@ Chris: I think it’s difficult to offer single models for download. There are not only the model files (.x file and .dds files) that must be delivered, but there are also changes in other files. Or you would have to create a .xli file for every single model and if it’s a model with night light also a light .list file. I think that isn’t such a good idea, as RTR would finally have to open and read hundreds of files when starting. But of course BrainBombers can tell more about that.

    Best regards,

    Willi

    Hi,

Now you can find the promised step-by-step informations about model construction and structure in the Modelling FAQ thread: http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?start=10&boardid=19&thid=214” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.wleopold.ch/n_forum/viewthread.php?start=10&boardid=19&thid=214.

I hope it will be helpfull for those who are interested in modelling for RTR. :)

    Kind regards,

    Willi

    Hi Rule the Rail friends

A simple thing, but nevertheless important for realistic layout construction: abutments. They are constructed the way, they are almost buried in the ground, when you place them on your layout. Then you can lift them to the desired height.

More abutments and retaining walls as well will follow.

    Kind regards,

    Willi
